I didn’t really think a phone case could change my view on my personal tech until I got a capybara case for my Samsung phone.

Most people think of a case on their phone as purely practical, as I did. I thought of a case being a defensive barrier, I offered my phone protection with a case of a single color or a clear case, and then end of my concern. Functional, Yes. Unique? Not in the slightest My phone case felt indistinguishable from anyone else’s I saw my phone as generic.

This sense of uniformity changed with a capybara case. It was a little more playful, and the little guy made me smile and brightened my day when I got out my phone. I was somewhat taken aback by the design, but most of all how much the case changed how I viewed the rest of my phone.

I really began to appreciate the aesthetic of my phone. I changed my wallpaper to a more neutral, warmer color that went well with the case rather than one that would poorly contrast. I did a deep clean of my home screen, rearranging my apps to fit the overall relaxed and cozy vibe of the capybara design, even down to the widgets.

I think it was the case that clinched the uniqueness of my phone from all other technology that made my phone more personal; it became a way for me to express myself. I got to say I was at a meeting or at a café how people would really my phone case. Maybe people would notice at the meeting, and even if we’ve never met, I’m sure it sparked some small talk. Even beyond the utility, the case was comfortable to hold and offered something most case lacked. I didn’t have to the utility for it to look really good. It offered protection and an excellent grip.

An improvement to my daily rituals began with a small customization to a simple accessory. It was a case with capybaras I was reminded once more that personalization doesn’t have to be expensive or over the top.
